Collected in large white water rivers in southeastern Peru, Rio Madre de Dios, Rio Tambopata, Rio Las Piedras, Rio Inambari, Rio Los Amigos.

Schooling along sandy shores. Found mixed with other characins such as Aphyocharax.

Water is normally turbid with a moderate current.

This fish is very delicate at time of capture and die almost instantly. If handled carefully they can be acclimated to the aquarium. Once acclimated they are hardy.
